The St Albans St Cecilia Festival Society
was formed in 1955 to celebrate St Cecilia's Day with a combined
performance by the three St Albans Music Societies (St Albans Choral
Society, St Albans Bach Choir and the St Albans Orchestral Society) of
Handel's Messiah.
This initial event was followed by an
increasingly ambitious series of biennial concerts as the main aim of
the Society has become the performance of works outside the scope of the
individual member societies.
With few exceptions, since formation,
concerts have been given in the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Albans
every two years. Although St Cecilia remains the inspiration,
celebration on or around the Saint's day is no longer seen as the
optimum date.
Membership too has changed over the years
with Radlett Choral Society welcomed as a new member.
